A~Line: Kendall Yellowhorn Homme F/W 06

Canadian designer Kendall Yellowhorn always takes an unconventional approach to creating his men's wear line Kendall Yellowhorn Homme. Yellowhorn draws from pop culture as well as history - resulting in an interdisciplinary collection that becomes intellectually stimulating as well as desirably wearable. For Fall 2006 the mood of the collection is loosely based on the idea of loneliness and love as relayed by author Kazuo Ishiguro in his novel The Unconsoled. For imagery Yellowhorn recalled the love affair between an Inuit and Métis in the movie Map of the Human Heart by Vincent Ward, as well as the album, How To Set Yourself on Fire, by The Stars. French sculptor Jean Antoine Houdon inspired the details and draping techniques in the shirting, creating a modern romantic look. Rounding off this collection, ethnic patterns and details were also added to brighten the dark colour palette.

RETAIL THERAPY: Venetian Valentines

If you are looking for something sexy this Valentines day, then point your style compass towards Collage Gallery where you will discover Margot Van Lindenberg's Florentine velvet bras. Van Lindenberg is a fibre artist who is interested in the diversity of humanity and cultural expression. “I consider my designs unique and in between art and fashion,” she says. Her work is made of mostly silk, organza, habotai and velvet, which she hand dyes, silk screens or devores – an etching process on velvet. These fabric treatments are then turned into something wearable such as her one-of-a-kind scarves. This month Van Lindenberg decided to “have some fun, for Valentines Day,” so she created a bra out of red silk velvet. “My velvet bras are cropped tops, which I have manipulated the velvet to create a rich surface texture,” she says. To create this rich surface Van Lindenberg uses various lengths and tensions of stitches on a sewing machine, which she refers to the finished product as Florentine velvet, because of “the rich Italian history of velvet design, wear and production.” If a bra is not your style, Van Lindenberg has also created tops with the same stitching technique in black velvet and organza. These tops were inspired by turn of the century garments circa 1900 – 1920, that employs a different female silhouette. Van Lindenberg’s Florentine velvet bras and tops can be seen and purchased at Collage Gallery #206, 100 - 7th Ave. SW.
